Instagram extends hiding the number of likes trials in more 6 countries

Instagram has commenced the trial to hide the total number of likes that post receives from the users. The testing was first launched two months ago in Canada to control Instagram users’ pressure that could affect mental health. “We hope this test will remove the pressure of how many likes a post will receive, so you can focus on sharing the things you love,” said Mr. Mia Garlick who is the Instagram Director of Policy in New Zealand. The trials have now been extended in Ireland, Japan,Italy,Australia, Brazil, and New Zealand. This new development now means Instagram users of the selected countries will not be able to view the total amount of likes, which their images and videos get on user feeds. But the Instagram users can still see who liked their post. Currently, Instagram users will be seeing a certain user name and ‘others liked your post’ without the total number of likes being indicated.

According to the Instagram officials, the elimination of total likes that a post receives will help users to focus more on telling their stories and stop embracing likes as a measure of success. There has been shocking outrage as a result of the number of likes which posts receive as an indicator of user’s self-worth. Most of those who have been affected are young users. Research shows that young people are obsessed with social networking sites such as Instagram leading to stress and low self-esteem in an instance where a user receives negative feedback. In the wake of this, many are waiting to see if casting away the total number of likes below the Instagram post is the ideal solution. “We are now rolling the test out to Australia so we can learn more about how this can benefit people’s experiences on Instagram, and whether this change can help people focus less on likes and more on telling their story.”, Mia said in a statement.Although business Instagram accounts will be affected, it will still be possible to track data and analyze the results because users can see all the people who viewed and liked their posts without the overall number being indicated. It is believed that most users attach the value of Instagram with the number of likes that a post gets. The decision to adopt the new changes of getting rid of likes in the world remains vague as the development is only in the testing phase. The removal of likes comes a week after Instagram implemented other measures to curb online bullying through artificial intelligence.
