Are Instagram influencers slowly losing their influence?

Instagram Influencers are Instagram users with a credible number of followers in a certain field. These influencers have established wide power over the audience and affect their buying decisions leading businesses to work with them.

Most of the Instagram influencers are living a lavish lifestyle of fun travelling, partying and spending their money in five-star hotels.

And with Instagram, who can decline to endorse a brand and get paid to post promotional content for the companies?

These Instagram influencers command millions of followers and many brands have been utilizing them to advocate their products and boost sales.

In this digital era, influencer marketing has been booming and spreading like wildfire. However, online consumer behaviour is changing too fast.  But wait, I can bet on some of you are also starting to embrace a new perspective toward influencers.

To unmask the new trends on Instagram, the InfuencerDB marketing company conducted a research and its revelations have left many puzzled.

“Working with micro-influencers is one of the strongest marketing platforms of the moment. It’s really trusted and curated content,” Wickerwood’s Gabby told Business Insider Magazine.

“A lot of brands prefer to work with nano or micro-influencers because they’re a lot more focused and more targeted to their followers and audience,” Director Shirley Oakes added.

The founder of Zyper tool says that Instagram influencers are becoming less effective and its rewarding for businesses to partner with customers who are genuine fans of the brand than just paying influencers to post.

She asserts that real fans who honestly like the product are paramount than influencers who are doing it to be paid.

“That lack of trust is really where we’re seeing a shift to going back to this peer-to-peer grassroots level. Because at the end of the day, the most effective form of advertising is peer-to-peer referral,” she stated.

The research demonstrated that influencers with 1,000 – 5,000 followers have 8.8 % engagement rates while those with 5000 -10,000 followers has got 6.3 percent.

The engagement rate is more vibrant with the influencers who have a few followers simply because it’s possible to engage with them either replying in DMs or commenting on follower’s post.

Some of the superstar influencers who made it to the top have been carried away by fame and are no longer in touch with some of their followers.

According to the study, Instagram influencers with approximate of 10,000 followers worldwide have got 3.6% engagement rate.

The analytical InfuencerDB noted that brands are likely to start embracing new strategy of micro-influencers who target small and specific relatable audience.

“While influencers with more than 10,000 followers may help to reach a broader audience, marketers may see better engagement by working with multiple “nano-influencers” who have a smaller reach among highly dedicated followers”, the company noted in a statement.

According to InfuencerDB, the engagement rates on the sponsored posts have reduced from 4.0% in 2016 to 2.9% in 2019 while organic posts have reduced

The decline in engagement of macro influencers posts shows that followers are no longer interested in being bombarded with sponsored content.

Originally, brands used influencers to endorse and promote their products organically. It focused on targeted audience on the social media platforms.

As a corporate ambassador, it is important for the influencers to remain focused and post consistently until the end of the campaign.

With the recent launch of hiding likes on Instagram posts, many influencers have argued it may adversely affect their business.

One of the top Instagram Influencers Miss Zak Hasleby says the latest changes would break the “backbone” of influencers.

Jessika Power was quoted by Daily Mail saying, “It’s okay because our income works off of the analytics,” she remarked.

Instagram is currently running tests of hiding the total number of likes which post receives from followers in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Ireland, Japan, Italy and New Zealand.

Social media analysts have argued the new feature on Instagram will deal a major blow to Instagram Influencers but time will tell.
